The backstory
Stable Diffusion is the open image model that made generation ungatekeepable: open weights you can run on your own machine, fine-tune, and build products on without asking permission. Hosted proprietary models beat it on out-of-the-box convenience and polish, but none offer full local control at zero marginal cost. It survived because the whole point, ownership, privacy, and unlimited local use, is something a closed API fundamentally can't provide.
