The backstory
Shopify is the operating system for online stores, handling storefronts, checkout, payments, inventory, shipping and a huge app ecosystem. AI writes product descriptions and can generate a storefront, and Shopify added those tools, but that's the easy, glamorous layer. What nobody has replaced is the unglamorous plumbing: taking payments reliably, managing stock and fulfilling orders at scale. It survived because it owns commerce infrastructure; AI just writes the copy that sits on top of it.
