Buttondown
A small, fast, markdown-first newsletter tool.
NOT REALLY
why this verdict
Keep paying — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the email job, so this one still earns its $9/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- AI newsletter writers flooded inboxes and devalued generated sends. OpenAI, March 1, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: beehiiv and Kit.
- What the call is worth $108/yr
- $9/mo at the entry paid tier — $108 a year per seat.

The backstory
Buttondown is the anti-suite: plain markdown, no drag-and-drop builder, one developer's taste, cheap. The AI wave never attacked it because writing was not the product — deliverability, archives, imports and paid subscriptions were. More generated noise arguably makes a human-written list worth more.
