Zotero
Free open-source reference manager that collects, organises and cites your research sources.
why this verdict
Keep it — Google has not replaced it
Google's version overlaps, but does not finish the research job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- NotebookLM and chat assistants summarising sources without any library step. Google, November 19, 2024 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: JabRef and NotebookLM.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
Zotero saves papers and web sources from the browser, stores the PDFs and generates citations in thousands of styles inside your word processor. AI tools that read and summarise documents make the reading step feel lighter, but they do not maintain a permanent, exportable library or produce journal-accurate references. Zotero survives because the value is the owned, portable database and the citation engine, not the summarising.
