Keep paying — OpenAI has not replaced it

The backstory
Undermind runs a search agent over the scientific literature, reading candidates, refining its query from what it finds and returning a written report with the long-tail papers keyword search misses. General deep research modes overlap heavily and cost nothing extra. Undermind survives because it is tuned narrowly for scientific recall rather than readable prose, and researchers judge it on whether it found the obscure paper, not on how it writes.
