Temporal
Durable execution platform that makes long-running, failure-tolerant workflows plain code.
why this verdict
Keep paying — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $100/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Agent frameworks claiming durable multi-step orchestration as a built-in feature. OpenAI, March 11, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Inngest, Restate and Trigger.dev.

The backstory
Temporal runs workflows that survive crashes, restarts and week-long waits by recording every step and replaying deterministic code. Agent frameworks now advertise their own orchestration and state handling, which looks like overlap. In practice those frameworks reach for durable execution as soon as an agent run has to survive a deploy or a rate limit. Temporal has become part of the AI stack rather than a casualty of it.
