Redis
In-memory data store used for caching, queues, rate limiting, sessions and vector search.
why this verdict
Keep paying — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $5/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Built-in conversation state and vector storage in the OpenAI Responses API. OpenAI, March 11, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Valkey, Upstash and DragonflyDB.

The backstory
Redis is the default in-memory store for caches, sessions, rate limiters and job queues, and it added vector search for retrieval workloads. The Responses API keeps conversation state and offers hosted vector storage, which removes one reason a small AI app would reach for Redis. That is one workload among many. Sub-millisecond caching in front of a database is a fundamental building block, and the AI boom has increased how much of it people need, not less.
