The backstory
Pi, from Inflection AI, was a personal, empathetic AI companion designed to feel warm and supportive in conversation and voice. That warmth was its whole differentiator, but general assistants absorbed it: ChatGPT gained natural voice and memory, letting it hold friendly, personalized conversations too. Pi is wounded because its distinctive companion tone is no longer unique, and after Inflection's team largely moved to Microsoft, momentum stalled against far larger assistants.
