MongoDB
Document database with a managed Atlas service, horizontal scaling and built-in vector search.
why this verdict
Keep paying — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $57/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Models writing correct SQL as easily as document queries, eroding the ease-of-use pitch. OpenAI, August 7, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: PostgreSQL, Supabase and CouchDB.
- What the call is worth $684/yr
- $57/mo at the entry paid tier — $684 a year per seat.

The backstory
MongoDB stores flexible JSON-like documents and won a generation of developers who found relational schemas slow to start with. Part of that appeal was that writing SQL and designing normalised tables took effort, and models have flattened that learning curve. Relational databases got easier to use, which genuinely dulls one argument for Mongo. Atlas operations, sharding, change streams and vector search on the same cluster are infrastructure commitments that outlast any query-writing convenience.
