The backstory
Metabase is open-source business intelligence: connect a database, build dashboards, and let non-technical staff ask questions without writing SQL. Claude can query a warehouse and answer in plain language, which pressures ad-hoc analysis. But Metabase survived because governed, self-hostable BI beats one-off chat: shared dashboards, permissions, and a consistent source of truth teams trust. It is free to run and keeps the numbers reproducible, which a chatbot answer is not.
