The backstory
Genmo released Mochi as an open-weight video model at a point when almost everything competitive was closed, which earned it real standing with researchers and the ComfyUI crowd. Commercially that is a hard place to stand: the closed models pulled ahead on quality, the Chinese open-weight releases pulled ahead on capability per parameter, and open-sourcing your differentiator means the community can serve it without you. The research contribution outlasted the product's window.
