The backstory
dbt brought software engineering practice to analytics: SQL models in Git, with tests, documentation and a lineage graph. Writing and refactoring those models was the day job of a whole role, and Claude now does much of that drafting. That reduces headcount pressure and therefore seat growth for dbt Cloud. The open-source core, the lineage metadata and the orchestration layer are still where teams keep their transformation logic, so the standard holds even as the paid surface tightens.
