The backstory
Cloudinary turned image handling into a URL parameter, and for a decade that was the sane way to serve responsive media. Then frameworks absorbed it: Next.js optimises images out of the box, Vercel and Cloudflare bundle transformation, and generative models create assets that never touch a media pipeline. Cloudinary's enterprise asset management business and its AI cropping and tagging keep large media teams paying, but the developer default it once owned has been redistributed.
