The backstory
Clio runs the back office for law firms of all sizes: time tracking, trust accounting, client intake and billing, a regulated function that has to be accurate to the cent. AI drafting assistants can write a solid contract or brief, but they cannot manage a law firm's trust accounts or generate compliant invoices tied to a case management system, which is the actual reason most firms pay for Clio. Clio has also added its own AI features rather than cede ground, keeping the practice management system of record firmly in its own hands.
