Baseten
Platform for deploying and scaling open-source and custom models in production.
NOT REALLY
why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Frontier model APIs being cheaper and better than self-hosting an open model for most tasks. OpenAI, September 25, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? paid only
- 3 replacements listed, all paid.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Baseten handles the unpleasant middle of model deployment: containerising weights, autoscaling GPUs, keeping cold starts survivable and serving with low latency. The threat is that hosted frontier APIs are so good and so cheap that self-hosting looks like nostalgia. The demand that keeps arriving is different: companies with fine-tuned models, strict data residency, or inference bills large enough that dedicated capacity beats per-token pricing, and that group grows as AI features move from prototype to scale.
