Vitest
Vite-native test runner with a Jest-compatible API and instant watch mode.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Agents writing the tests, removing the human ergonomics advantage a test runner competes on. Anthropic, July 15, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Jest, node:test and Bun test.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Vitest won the JavaScript test runner slot by reusing the Vite pipeline, so tests run through the same transform as the app and start in milliseconds. Its pitch was authoring ergonomics, and agents now write most of the tests, which should have hurt. It helps instead: agents write tests in enormous volume and then run them in a loop, so a runner that starts instantly and reports failures crisply is precisely what an autonomous coding loop is bottlenecked on.
