Vite
Native-ESM build tool and dev server that made front-end hot reload feel instant.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Coding agents scaffolding entire projects without a human ever choosing a build tool. Anthropic, February 24, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Rspack, Parcel and esbuild.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Vite replaced Webpack as the default front-end build tool by leaning on native ES modules in dev and Rollup in production, turning multi-second rebuilds into single-digit milliseconds. Agents now pick the build tool for you, which removes the evaluation step Vite used to win. That barely matters: they overwhelmingly pick Vite, because it is what the templates and the training data are full of. Being the default an agent reaches for is a stronger position than being the tool a human researched.
