why this verdict
Keep it for the workflow, not the AI
PostgreSQL covers the headline feature free, and the workflow around it is why you would still open this.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Postgres extensions covering documents, graphs and vectors without a new query language. Anthropic, July 8, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers headline only editorial call
- The headline feature, but not the workflow, data or integrations around it.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 1 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: PostgreSQL.

The backstory
SurrealDB bundles the document, graph, relational and vector models behind a single query language, aiming to be the only database a project needs. The pitch runs into a hard fact of the agent era: models write excellent Postgres and mediocre SurrealQL, because one has thirty years of examples and the other has a few years of docs. Every new query language now pays that tax, and Postgres keeps absorbing the same features through extensions that need no retraining.
