Prometheus
The open-source time-series database and alerting system that standardised metrics.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- AI observability tools that ingest raw telemetry and skip the hand-built metric layer. Anthropic, September 9, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: VictoriaMetrics and Grafana Mimir.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Prometheus is the reason a modern service exposes a metrics endpoint at all, and its query language is the lingua franca of infrastructure alerting. AI-native observability vendors argue you should send raw telemetry and let a model find the anomaly, which threatens the discipline of hand-curating metrics and alert rules. Prometheus is unusually well defended: it is free, it runs inside the cluster, its data model is a CNCF standard, and the AI tools mostly consume PromQL rather than replace it.
