Prettier
Opinionated code formatter that ended the argument about where the braces go.
why this verdict
Keep it for the workflow, not the AI
Biome and dprint cover the headline feature free, and the workflow around it is why you would still open this.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Rust-based formatters bundled into toolchains, and agents that emit already-formatted code. Anthropic, June 18, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers headline only editorial call
- The headline feature, but not the workflow, data or integrations around it.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Biome, dprint and deno fmt.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Prettier's contribution was social rather than technical: it made code style a solved problem by removing the options. That victory is now being absorbed by everything downstream. Biome formats the same way in Rust at a fraction of the runtime, Deno and Bun ship formatters in the box, and coding agents emit conventionally formatted code before the pre-commit hook ever fires. Prettier remains the reference implementation everyone else deliberately matches, which is a real legacy and a shrinking install base.
