OpenTofu
Open-source fork of Terraform created after HashiCorp changed its licence.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Terraform's ecosystem gravity and HashiCorp's acquisition by IBM stabilising the incumbent. Anthropic, August 12, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 1 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Crossplane.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
OpenTofu exists because HashiCorp moved Terraform to a business source licence and the community forked the last open version under the Linux Foundation. It is a drop-in replacement that has since shipped features Terraform lacked, notably state encryption. Its survival was never a technical question but a governance one, and enough large vendors backed it that the fork stuck, which is rare. Agents writing infrastructure code write it identically for both.
