OpenTelemetry
Vendor-neutral standard for traces, metrics and logs across every major language.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.

The backstory
OpenTelemetry exists so that instrumenting an application does not lock it to one observability vendor, and it has become the default the whole industry emits. The pitch against it is that AI-era tooling can infer topology from eBPF or auto-instrumentation without anyone writing a span. In practice that produces machine-shaped data with no business context, and the LLM observability wave standardised its own semantic conventions on top of OTel rather than around it, which entrenched the standard further.
