Neovim
Hyperextensible Vim fork with Lua configuration and a first-class LSP client.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- AI-native editors like Cursor bundling agents that terminal editors must assemble by hand. Anthropic, June 18, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Helix and Zed.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
Neovim modernised Vim with Lua config, built-in LSP and an async plugin architecture, and its users are the least likely developers in the world to switch editors. The threat was that Cursor and its imitators bundled agentic AI that a terminal editor would have to reassemble from plugins. The community did exactly that, and then the centre of gravity moved to terminal-based agents like Claude Code, which suits people who already live in a terminal multiplexer better than it suits a GUI editor.
