Kilo
Open-source agentic coding platform spanning VS Code, the CLI and the cloud.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Cursor and Claude Code owning the paid coding-agent market with far larger budgets. Anthropic, April 2, 2026 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Cline and OpenCode.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Kilo began as a fork of Roo Code, itself a fork of Cline, and shipped fast enough to overtake both, reaching general availability in April 2026 with parallel tool calls, subagents and an agent manager that runs isolated worktrees side by side. Its wedge against the funded incumbents is economic and ideological at once: MIT licensed, bring your own model keys, zero inference markup, and no silent model switching, which is the specific grievance that repeatedly pushes developers off subscription coding tools.
