why this verdict
Keep it for the workflow, not the AI
Vitest and Bun test cover the headline feature free, and the workflow around it is why you would still open this.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Faster Vite-native and runtime-native runners winning the agent test loop on startup time. Anthropic, July 15, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers headline only editorial call
- The headline feature, but not the workflow, data or integrations around it.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Vitest, Bun test and node:test.

The backstory
Jest defined what a JavaScript test looks like, and its API is so widely copied that competitors advertise compatibility with it rather than replacing it. That is the trouble: Vitest, Bun and Node's built-in runner all speak Jest's dialect while starting far faster. When an agent runs the suite hundreds of times in an afternoon, cold-start cost compounds into real money. Jest keeps a colossal installed base and remains the syntax every model writes by default, which slows the bleed considerably.
