why this verdict
Keep paying — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $20/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Claude Code and Codex offering autonomous engineering inside subscriptions developers already hold. Anthropic, July 14, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? paid only
- 3 replacements listed, all paid.
- What the call is worth $240/yr

The backstory
Cognition launched Devin as the first AI software engineer, absorbed a wave of scepticism about its demos, then bought Windsurf in 2025 to pair an autonomous agent with an editor developers already used. That combination is the strategy: an IDE for the work you supervise and an agent for the work you delegate. It competes against the model vendors themselves, which is the hardest possible position, and it answered by targeting the enterprise migration and legacy modernisation work the general tools handle badly.
