CockroachDB
Distributed SQL database that survives node and region failure while speaking Postgres.
why this verdict
Keep paying — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $50/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Serverless Postgres platforms offering branching and scale without a distributed rewrite. Anthropic, July 8, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: YugabyteDB and Neon.

The backstory
CockroachDB solves the problem of a SQL database that keeps serving when a region disappears, with correctness guarantees that make it a fit for payments and regulated workloads. Neon and Supabase took the developer mindshare by offering Postgres with branching and a free tier, and its licence change pushed hobbyists away. It survives because the companies who actually need multi-region consistency are not price-shopping, and the AI boom put more of them in that position, not fewer.
